Retrofitting Stormwater Ponds with an Algal Ecotechnology for Enhanced Water Quality Treatment

Public-Private partnerships, like the first of its kind Clean Water Partnership (CWP) in Prince George’s County, Maryland, address stormwater pollution from impervious surfaces by installing or retrofitting Green Infrastructure. Stormwater ponds in Prince George’s county make up the majority of the CWP’s 2000 impervious acre treatment goal for stormwater. The Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) credits wet ponds for 50% TN, 60% TP and 90% TSS removal from intercepted runoff, leaving a remainder of nutrient removal that can be accredited by the Algal Turf Scrubber® (ATS™) which is a newly approved Best Management Practice by MDE. 

The Algal Turf Scrubber® is an algae-based ecotechnology for removing nutrients from polluted waters. The ATS™ has been assessed for its capability of nutrient removal from various water bodies by harvesting algal biomass along its flow way. However, very little is known for ATS™ performance in wet pond systems for nutrient removal. The aim of this study is to examine the nutrient removal of three (2 x 50) meter ATS™ systems, each installed separately adjacent to their respective stormwater pond system, with an integrated constructed drying evaporation bed for the algal biomass. NOAA evaporation rates in Maryland anticipate about 3mm/day evaporation from the algal evaporation bed which is sized to produce dried algal biomass every week. An estimate of nutrient removal rates and the sizing of an algal drying bed are detailed.
